Home Energy Management with or without an Advanced Metering Infrastructure - Part 1

By Louis Szablya, P.E., VP of Marketing and Utility Solutions, Energate, April, 24, 2012 - Why are electric utilities progressing so slowly on residential demand response as peak demand for electricity continues to grow, creating the very real possibility of a serious crisis? Even for those utilities where demand has slowed owing to the economic downturn need to be ready for the rapid growth that will come when the economy strengthens. The crisis initially will be financial, as utilities purchase more power from the limited supply of producers, paying more for wholesale electricity on the spot market, while being unable to translate those higher prices into correspondingly higher retail rates. If utilities continue to move too slowly, peak demand will exceed total available generating capacity sooner rather than later (as the economy expands, the population grows, and electric vehicles become more common), forcing utilities to either build new power plants, or impose more involuntary load curtailments in the form of rolling brownouts or blackouts.  more...

Up in Smoke: Seven Gigawatts of Coal Retrenches from PJM

By Ade Dosunmu, Senior Director of Strategic Markets, Comverge, August, 05, 2011 - At the most recent annual auction for electric capacity in PJM, the Base Residual Auction (BRA) for delivery year 2014/15 electric capacity cleared with lower volumes versus the prior year due to lower demand. Prices were lower than previous years in the Mid Atlantic Area Council (MAAC) region and higher than previous years in the rest of the Regional Transmission Organization (RTO). These intra-PJM price variations were anticipated due to the impact of new west-to-east transmission facilities, the economic downturn and the effect of recent EPA rulings on generator retirements.  more...

Demand Response - Quantifying the Impact on the Customer

By Peter Noland, Consulting Partner, Artois-Bell, July, 29, 2010 - Demand Response (DR) is already a clear cut winner in category of "killer apps" in the evolving Smart Grid. A key area of opportunity moving forward, and which may help provide a more comprehensive valuation of DR programs, may thus be to give deeper consideration as to DR's impact upon the utility's relationship with its customers.  more...

By Joao Gomes, Technical Manager, , July, 15, 2010 - The problem is not in product design, but in its daily operations, is where the challenge is presented. Utilities and Consumers will have to find different paths, but both convergent and this will not be easy, alone, technology may not be able to establish or even bring the expected benefits.  more...

How intelligent load shifting can solve two of the biggest problems in smart energy

By John Steinberg, CEO and Co-Founder, EcoFactor, June, 29, 2010 - During the dark days of early 2009, one of the brightest spots anywhere on the economic horizon was the smart grid, and more specifically, the anticipated full-speed-ahead, full-scale deployment of smart meters. The expected benefits were well-understood and significant: instant meter reads, quick bill settlements, and improved visibility into local outages. Smart meters also enable time-variant rates, which have the potential to smooth spiky load curves and thereby improve efficiency up and down the grid.  more...
